Internship Robotics Engineering | Photorealistic apple simulation
- Starting in february
- Oldenzaal, Overijssel
- Internship allowance
There is only one real moment when we can validate our apple picking robot: during harvest. For development during the rest of the year, we have two test environments: a very simple Gazebo simulation for vision, kinematic and integration tests, and a setup with real felled trees with plastic apples to also test dynamics.
The nice thing about a simulator, like Gazebo, is that it provides a ground truth. But in Gazebo you can only use one apple model.
Your assignment
Your task will be to set up a proof-of-concept with another simulator. This simulator should include a camera and communicate the images to ROS2, and render apples with varying properties, such as size, shape, and color in various lighting conditions. The simulator should provide images at the same rate as the physical cameras. We have images from this year's field test available for inspiration.
Workflow
In our team, we work with the Agile/SCRUM workflow. We have a daily stand-up with the robotics team to share progress and identify obstacles. At the end of every 3-week sprint, you will present your results of the current sprint and your plans for the upcoming sprint. One of the robotics engineers will serve as your daily supervisor and main contact; you will have a weekly one-on-one meeting for in-depth discussion. Of course you are always welcome to ask your colleagues questions.
The team
We are a team of highly motivated robotics engineers, working on various R&D projects such as the metal recycling line, the apple picking robot, and autonomously navigating cattle feeding robots. We are responsible for programming the manipulation, vision and navigation functionalities, and prefer to do this in C++ and ROS2.
What can you expect from us?
A challenging internship with flexible working hours and a flexible start date. You will work in an organization that values enjoyment, collaboration, and solidarity. The atmosphere at RIWO ensures that you will feel at home during your internship and be able to be yourself.
We also offer:
- Guidance from experienced developers
- A monthly internship allowance
- Use of a RIWO bicycle for commuting between the train station and RIWO
- The possibility of employment after graduation
